In a double modified McPherson Invitational, the Manhattan Indians came in with the fewest games played and took the title by winning both of their games, including a seven-point, 62-55 victory over Shawnee Heights on Saturday evening.

With the tournament already down to just four teams at its beginning, everything changed again after the first night of play when Maize South had to exit due to issues with the Coronavirus, leaving Manhattan, Shawnee Heights, and host McPherson to play it out and since Manhattan with its two wins took home the McPherson Invitational Championship for 2021.

The Indians Own Braxmeyer was named the tournament’s MVP as he was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammate Cameron Carr, Shawnee Heights Harvey Davis and Isaih Johnson plus Quincy Gholar of Maize South and Seth Madron of McPherson.

In the title game, Manhattan trailed by six at the end of both the first and second quarters before exploding for 22 points in the third while holding Shawnee Heights to just seven, giving the Indians a nine-point, 45-36 edge heading into the final eight minutes of play where they hung on for the seven-point win.

Tournament MVP Owen Braxmeyer scored a double-double for Manhattan in the game as he scored 16 points while pulling down 12 rebounds. Cade Perkins also scored 16 and Cameron Carr chipped in with 12 which included the only two three-pointers of the night for the Indians.

Other stat highlights for Manhattan had Jack Wilson getting nine rebounds, Carr blocking a pair of shots and the team hitting 18 free throws while out rebounding Shawnee Heights by 10.

Harvey Davis was the key offensive weapon for Shawnee Heights as he also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Isaih Johnson joined him in double digits scoring with 11.
