Wellington gets win over Valley Center

By William / McPherson Sentinel

MCPHERSON – It was raining three-point shots in the final game on Thursday at the Mid-America Classic in McPherson as Wellington and Valley Center battled it out to a final 71-67 victory in overtime by Wellington where the two teams combined to take 50 three-point shots and connected on 25 of those.

The Lady Hornets of Valley Center held a seven-point, 20-13 lead at the end of the first quarter before Wellington pulled within four at the halftime break and within two at the end of the third quarter.

After tying the game at the end of regulation on a three-pointer made with five seconds left in the game, the Lady Crusaders took the final lead in overtime to earn the final four-point win despite only making 13 of 31 on their free throws.

While Wellington hit on 10 three-pointers, led by Lexi Clift with four and Airalyn Frame with three, they also managed to win the game despite the Lady Hornets scoring on 15 three-pointers including a tournament record tying seven by Halle Brittain.

Brittain who managed to connect on seven of just eight three-point attempts, ties the Mid-America Classic record held by Tanner Hein of McPherson in 2012 and Taylor Robertson of McPherson in 2015.

The 15 three-pointers by Valley Center broke a nine-year old Classic record that was held by McPherson who had 12 in a game in 2012.

Brittain led the Lady Hornets with 22 points, while four others reached double digits including Ali Coash with 12, Anna Eldridge with 11 and Maci George who hit for 10.

Ali Zeka topped the offense for the Lady Crusaders with 21 points, while Airalyn Frame scored 17 and both Rylee Rusk and Lexi Clift each scored 12.

Wellington will now battle with host McPherson on Friday while Valley Center is now scheduled to play for fifth-place on Saturday.
