Dodge City qualifies for tourney finals with win over Dodge City

MCPHERSON – For the first time in five trips, the Dodge City girls basketball team has not only made the semi-finals, but they have earned the right to play in the championship game of the Mid-America Classic with their 43-21 win over Manhattan on Friday.

Now 11-0 for the season, the Lady Red Demons will play the winner of the matchup between McPherson and Wellington at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday while Manhattan will return to the court at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday to play Valley Center for fifth place in the Mid-America Classic.

From the opening tip Dodge City put a brick wall defense up against Manhattan as they held the Lady Indians to just four first quarter points and only five more in the second to take a commanding 23-9 advantage into the halftime break.

The solid defense continued in the final two quarters as Manhattan only squeezed out 12 more points while the Lady Red Demons cruised on in for the final 22-point victory.

Dodge City held Manhattan to just 8-34 from the field while also dominating the boards with a 33-22 advantage in rebounds. The Lady Red Demons were quick on the hands as well as they made 12 steals including three by Kisa Unruh.

Camree Johnson and Kisa Unruh led the Dodge City offensive attack with 11 and 10 points respectively, with Unruh and Lauren Gleason each getting a pair of three-pointers as eight ladies put points in the scorebook.

Only five Lady Indians scored for Manhattan with Maxine Doering and Taylor Claussen leading the way with seven and six points each.
