Bullpup boys fall to Derby
DERBY – The final three quarters of Friday’s game between the McPherson and Derby boys was nothing but the Panthers out gunning the Bullpups while playing a stingy enough defense that Derby scored a whopping 29-point, 72-43 win.
With the Bullpups coming into the game at 6-6 and Derby just 4-5, the first quarter went as many thought it might and the two teams played to a 13-13 tie.
But when the second quarter began, the Panthers stepped outside the three-point arc and gunned down the Bullpups, hitting 6-of-6 on three pointers in the second quarter while dropping in 11-14 from the field to put 28 points on the scoreboard while holding McPherson to just nine, giving Derby a commanding 41-22 advantage at the halftime break.
The Panthers then put another 19 points in the scorebook in the third while McPherson only scored six, before cruising in for the final 29-point margin of victory.
For the game the Bullpups did hit on 41% of their field goals, 16-39, but only made three three-pointers while the Panthers connected on 61% of their shots from the field, 28-47, and a near unbelievable 14 three pointers.
Trent Parke was the big gun for the Panthers as he went 6-6 on three pointers and 10-11 overall from the field on his way to scoring 26 points. Fontaine Williams chipped in with 10 as eight Panthers scored in the game including six who connected on at least one three-pointer.
For the Bullpups, they were led by Seth Madron who scored 14 while Jayden Dukes hit for eight and Jaytin Alexander chipped in with seven. Only Eli Pyle, Dukes and Hunter Alvord hit three-pointers for McPherson.
With the loss, the Bullpups have now lost four games in a row and drop below .500 to 6-7 for the season.
Not all was lost on the road trip for McPherson as the Bullpups junior varsity scored a seven-point, 53-46 win as Sam Becker and Hunter Alvord led the way with 18 and 11 points each.
In the Bullpups ninth-grade game, they pushed their winning streak to nine as they stayed unbeaten with an 81-42 hammering of the young Panthers. Four ninth-grade Bullpups hit for double digits in the game, led by Jayce Schriner with 17 while Kyden Thompson scored 16, Henry Boese put up 13 and Owen Pyle netted 10.
The Bullpups will be back on the competitive hardwood on Tuesday when they return to the Roundhouse to play host to Andale.
