Bullpups get one point win in rivalry game
MCPHERSON – A rivalry game can not get much closer than the game in the Roundhouse on Tuesday when the McPherson boys held on by one-point to score a 51-50 win over Buhler.
The Bullpups had command of the game in the first half as they held a five-point, 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and went into the halftime break holding a 12-point, 31-19 advantage and it would have been 15 if the Crusaders Max Alexander had not het a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer.
Buhler, thanks to the hot shooting of Alexander, chipped away at the lead and narrowed the deficit down to six at 42-36 heading into the fourth quarter and then brought it down to one with seconds left when the Bullpups fouled, and the Crusaders Jack Voth was unable to connect on either of the final two free throws to give McPherson the narrow victory.
Buhler was led by Max Alexander as he finished with 37 of the teams 50 points, including 24 in the second half, and this included five three-pointers in the game.
For McPherson, the Bullpups were led by Max’s cousin Jayten Alexander who connected on four three-pointers in scoring 19 points while dishing out four assists. Seth Madron also reached double digits in the scorebook with 15 while Darriene Gibbs had another strong game by scoring six points, leading the team in rebounds with six and making a pair of steals.
The victory evens the season record for the Bullpups at 8-8 as they go on the road Friday for their final road trip of the season at Winfield.
Cory Muehler scored 13 points in leading the Bullpup junior varsity to a 10-point, 52-42 win, while the freshman Pups buried Buhler 69-20 as Owen Pyle hit for 17 and Muehler had 15.
