MCPHERSON – Despite finishing the regular season with a 10-10 record, the McPherson boys still managed to earn a tie with Augusta and Buhler for the AVCTL Division III league title on Friday with a convincing 68-38 win over Circle at home in the Roundhouse.

The three-way tie came because the Bullpups finished 8-2 in league games just as did both Augusta and Buhler and since the Bullpups swept Buhler, Buhler won both games with Augusta and Augusta did the same with the Bullpups, it becomes a three-way knot for the league title.

As for the game on Friday, McPherson finally pulled out of their offensive doldrums where they could not make 40 points in a game in the past two contests and put up 68 of which many came from connecting on nine three-pointers.

At one point in the first half, McPherson held a 15-point, 31-16 lead before the T-Birds found a way to outscore the Bullpups 11-3 down the stretch and drop the Bullpup advantage to just seven, 34-27 heading into the halftime break.

McPherson came out in the second half and dominated the rest of the game by outscoring Circle 34-11 to earn the final 30-point win.

For the game, the Bullpups found their touch from the field, connecting on 28-of-49 or 57% from the field while holding the T-Birds to just 14-of-44 or 32%.

Adam Elliott led four Bullpups in double digits as he scored 17 of which 15 came on five three-pointers, while Seth Madron hit for 15 and both Eli Pyle and Jayten Alexander chipped in with 12. All of Pyle’s points came from hitting four three-pointers.

Drew Middleton was the lone T-Bird to make double digits as he led the team with 16, though Luke McGinnis came close with nine.

With the 10-10 mark the Bullpups now prep for their first round of substate to be played at home in the Roundhouse on Tuesday when they battle Pratt. Pratt will bring a 7-12 record to the game.

In the junior varsity battle, McPherson closed out the season 14-4 with a 22-point, 56-34 win as Braeden Ediger led the team with 13 points.

Celebrating a 17-1 season, the Bullpup freshmen boys scored a 24-point, 55-31 dismantling of Circle as Owen Pyle topped the team with six three-pointers and 18 points.
