Every day begins with preparation—a shift report, truck inspections, and ensuring every piece of equipment is ready for the unpredictable calls ahead. The station comes alive with training sessions, team collaboration, and moments of camaraderie as providers prepare for the demands of the day. Whether running emergency calls, advancing their education, or building community relationships, the women of McPherson EMS set a remarkable standard.
Paramedic and Field Training Officer Kelsi Hilger leads by example. In addition to managing patient care, she mentors new hires, leads continuing education programs, and heads the public relations team. Hilger’s dedication to education and mentorship has made an impact on her team. She recalls reconnecting with a cardiac arrest survivor months after saving their life.
“It is a great feeling to know that, because of the skills and treatments my team and I provided, they are alive and able to continue their life with their family,” Hilger said.
Kaylee Bonneville joined McPherson EMS in November 2023, inspired by a traumatic experience in which EMS responders provided compassion and care to her family during her mother’s passing. Determined to bring hope to others on their worst days, Kaylee ensures ambulances are properly stocked and clean, ready to respond to emergencies. As an EMT, she works closely with her partner, believing that teamwork is central to success. Kaylee highlights how her role has evolved since she first started, as she continues to learn and hone her skills in patient care and assessment.
“I wanted to be the hope on someone’s bad day,” she said.
Meanwhile, Kylee Bonneville, who joined McPherson EMS in September 2022, brings a strong sense of responsibility and dedication to her work. Her key tasks include driving the ambulance safely to scenes, collaborating with her partner, and maintaining equipment readiness. Like her sister, Kylee was inspired by EMS’s response to their family’s tragedy, as well as by the mentorship of Paramedic Kelsi Hilger. Kylee emphasizes her role in building trust within the community, participating in public relations events, and educating children about EMS equipment. Her proudest moments include initiating life-saving CPR for a cardiac arrest patient and contributing to the department’s recruitment and training committees.
“Seeing someone go into cardiac arrest and then seeing their pulse return is truly special,” Kylee shared.
Paramedic Emma Singleton, who joined McPherson EMS in early 2023, exemplifies positivity and passion for patient care. Inspired by her college experiences and the encouragement of a teammate, Singleton transitioned from part-time EMT to full-time paramedic. Her contributions include serving on the protocol committee and connecting with the community during outreach events. Emma values the trust her patients place in her and plans to expand her medical expertise by attending physician assistant school.
Lieutenant Paramedic Justi Clemmons balances her role at McPherson EMS with the demands of motherhood. With nearly two decades of experience, Clemmons oversees crew management, patient care and department logistics. She began her EMS career as a young single mother seeking stability for her children and has since earned multiple teaching certifications, inspiring her team with her resilience and dedication. Justi finds fulfillment in training her crew, responding to emergencies and witnessing the results of lifesaving measures.
While these women share a commitment to excellence, they also acknowledge the challenges of working in a male-dominated field. Kaylee and Kylee both recognize the need to prove themselves capable, particularly in gaining respect from bystanders during calls. Clemmons recalls the pressure to demonstrate her physical and emotional strength when she first entered EMS. She celebrates the strides women have made, especially at McPherson EMS, where women are now the majority.
The women of McPherson EMS emphasize emotional support, fitness, and hobbies as outlets for stress relief. Whether discussing tough calls with colleagues, taking time to work out, or pursuing creative projects like woodworking, they find ways to manage the demands of their roles while staying grounded.
The women of McPherson EMS share a resounding message for young women considering the field: pursue your dreams with confidence and determination.
“You can do anything you put your mind to,” Clemmons said. Hilger added, “Jump in with both feet.”
As they look ahead, their goals reflect their commitment to growth and service. Kaylee and Kylee both aim to complete their paramedic certifications, while Hilger aspires to advance into an officer role. Singleton plans to attend physician assistant school, and Clemmons envisions continuing her education, possibly transitioning into nursing.
